The ice maker came with no instructions but if you managed to get the old one out, this one slides in fairly easily by reversing the process. There was an odd plastic piece screwed to the bottom of the unit which I removed and the bolted on the sliding shelf piece that was attached to my old unit. I plugged the unit in, slid it back into place and within 15-20 minutes the tray was already filled with water.
Make sure you let the first several batches go through and then throw away the ice to make sure you're not getting any manufacturing contaminants. I wiped the unit out a little and then let it run over night and dumped what it had created just to be paranoid.
If you replace this item and you're still having trouble, be sure to check the blinking LED on the side of the freezer that is the sensor/indicator light (assuming your model is like mine). There's a pattern to the LED blinks. On mine, it would blink twice, pause, and then repeat. If you close the flap for the sensor, the blinking would change to a solid light. If you close the flap, and you're still getting blinking then there's a good chance that the sensor is somehow blocked or no longer good. In this case, you'll need a control board which for mine was...I believe...this model: Whirlpool Refrigerator P.C.
